Homi Bhabha National Institute (HBNI) is a deemed-to-be university and one of India’s most prestigious research-focused institutions, established by the Department of Atomic Energy (DAE), Government of India. Named after the legendary Indian physicist Dr. Homi Jehangir Bhabha, the father of India’s nuclear program, HBNI was officially recognized as a university in 2005.
Unlike conventional universities, HBNI operates as a consortium of DAE institutions, providing advanced education and research opportunities in nuclear science, engineering, medical physics, radiochemistry, life sciences, and more.
🎖️ Deemed-to-be University status under UGC Act, 1956
✅ Recognized by UGC and regulated under Ministry of Education, Government of India
🧪 Controlled and funded by the Department of Atomic Energy (DAE)
🌍 International reputation in nuclear research, advanced technology, and applied sciences
HBNI is unique in its structure, functioning through leading national research centers and laboratories as its constituent institutions:
Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC), Mumbai
Indira Gandhi Centre for Atomic Research (IGCAR), Kalpakkam
Raja Ramanna Centre for Advanced Technology (RRCAT), Indore
Variable Energy Cyclotron Centre (VECC), Kolkata
Saha Institute of Nuclear Physics (SINP), Kolkata
Institute for Plasma Research (IPR), Gandhinagar
Tata Memorial Centre (TMC), Mumbai (for Oncology & Medical Physics)
Institute of Physics (IOP), Bhubaneswar
Harish-Chandra Research Institute (HRI), Prayagraj
These centers offer academic and research guidance while also conducting high-impact research and technology development.
HBNI offers research-intensive postgraduate and doctoral programs in specialized fields of science, engineering, and medicine.
Nuclear Physics, Theoretical Physics, Plasma Physics
Nuclear Engineering, Materials Science, Accelerator Physics
Radiological Safety, Radiation Biology, and Environmental Sciences
Medical Physics, Radiation Oncology (through TMC)
Integrated MSc-Ph.D. in Physics, Chemistry, and Biology
M.Tech + Ph.D. in Nuclear Engineering & Technology
🎯 HBNI also recognizes DNB (Oncology & related fields) via Tata Memorial Hospital and specialized Post-M.Sc. training at BARC.
As a part of DAE’s vast network, HBNI scholars gain access to state-of-the-art national laboratories equipped with world-class scientific infrastructure.
