Advanced Departmental Elective Courses
Our department offers a rich array of advanced elective courses that allow students to tailor their learning experience to their interests and career aspirations:
- Maternal and Child Health Nursing: This course delves deep into prenatal, perinatal, and postnatal care, exploring topics such as neonatal resuscitation, lactation support, and family planning strategies. Students learn to manage high-risk pregnancies, deliver evidence-based interventions, and coordinate care with multidisciplinary teams.
- Mental Health Nursing: Designed for students interested in psychiatric care, this course explores the complexities of mental illness, therapeutic communication, and crisis intervention techniques. Students gain hands-on experience with clients experiencing various disorders including depression, anxiety, schizophrenia, and trauma-related conditions.
- Community Health Nursing: This course focuses on promoting health at the population level through community assessments, health education programs, and disease prevention strategies. It emphasizes cultural competence, social determinants of health, and community engagement models used in public health nursing.
- Critical Care Nursing: Students learn advanced life support techniques, mechanical ventilation, hemodynamic monitoring, and emergency response protocols. The course includes simulations involving cardiac arrest, sepsis management, and respiratory failure to prepare students for ICU settings.
- Geriatric Nursing: This course addresses the unique needs of older adults, including chronic disease management, cognitive decline, medication safety, and end-of-life care. Students develop skills in assessing geriatric patients, implementing fall prevention strategies, and coordinating care with family members and caregivers.
- Public Health Nursing: Students explore public health policy, epidemiology, surveillance systems, and global health challenges. The course includes fieldwork components where students design and implement health promotion campaigns in local communities.
- Occupational Health Nursing: This elective prepares students to work in industrial environments, focusing on workplace safety, injury prevention, and employee wellness programs. Topics include ergonomics, exposure assessment, and developing health policies for specific industries such as manufacturing, construction, or mining.
- Telehealth and Digital Nursing: Students are introduced to emerging technologies in healthcare delivery, including remote monitoring systems, e-health platforms, and teleconsultation services. The course covers best practices in digital communication, data privacy, and integrating technology into patient care.
Project-Based Learning Approach
Our department is committed to project-based learning that encourages students to apply theoretical knowledge to real-world problems:
- Mini-Projects (Year 1 & 2): These projects involve small-scale research studies, community health initiatives, or case analyses. Students work in teams under faculty supervision to investigate a specific issue and present findings.
- Capstone Project (Year 3 & 4): The final project is a comprehensive research study or intervention initiative that requires students to identify a significant healthcare challenge, propose a solution, collect data, analyze results, and present recommendations to stakeholders. Projects may involve collaboration with hospitals, NGOs, or government agencies.
Students are guided through the entire process by faculty mentors who provide expertise in research design, ethical considerations, data collection methods, and presentation skills. Evaluation criteria include project planning, execution quality, impact assessment, peer review, and final defense.
