Detailed Overview of Advanced Departmental Electives
Neurological Rehabilitation: This course focuses on understanding the pathophysiology of neurological disorders and applying evidence-based interventions for functional recovery. Students will learn about stroke rehabilitation, multiple sclerosis management, and traumatic brain injury treatment strategies.
Manual Therapy Techniques: Designed to enhance hands-on skills, this course covers joint mobilization, soft tissue manipulation, and dry needling techniques. Emphasis is placed on safe application and integration into clinical practice.
Community Health & Wellness: This elective explores public health approaches to physiotherapy, including community-based interventions, preventive care strategies, and health promotion initiatives tailored to underserved populations.
Advanced Electrotherapy: Students gain in-depth knowledge of electrical modalities such as TENS, EMS, laser therapy, and ultrasound. The course includes practical sessions on device setup, safety protocols, and outcome measurement.
Pediatric Physiotherapy: This course covers developmental milestones, common pediatric conditions, and age-appropriate treatment techniques. Students learn how to adapt interventions for children with cerebral palsy, autism spectrum disorders, and congenital anomalies.
Geriatric Physiotherapy: Focuses on aging-related changes in musculoskeletal and neurological systems. Topics include fall prevention, osteoporosis management, and maintaining independence in older adults.
Cardiopulmonary Physiotherapy: Addresses respiratory and cardiovascular diseases with emphasis on exercise-based interventions, breathing techniques, and cardiac rehabilitation protocols.
Orthopedic Physiotherapy: Covers musculoskeletal injuries and conditions requiring physical therapy intervention. Students study anatomy, biomechanics, surgical considerations, and post-operative rehabilitation plans.
Research Methodology: Prepares students for conducting scientific studies in physiotherapy. The course includes literature review techniques, hypothesis formation, data collection methods, and statistical analysis.
Clinical Rotation I: Provides exposure to diverse clinical environments such as hospitals, rehabilitation centers, and outpatient clinics. Students observe and assist in patient care under supervision.
Project-Based Learning Philosophy
The department believes that experiential learning is essential for developing competent professionals. Project-based learning is integrated into the curriculum through mandatory mini-projects in the third and fourth years and a final capstone project in the eighth semester.
Mini-projects are designed to simulate real-world challenges and encourage interdisciplinary collaboration. Students select topics based on personal interests or current industry trends, working closely with faculty mentors who guide them through research, design, and implementation phases.
The final-year capstone project involves a substantial investigation into a relevant issue in physiotherapy. Projects are often sponsored by healthcare institutions or funded through university grants. They culminate in presentations to faculty panels and potential industry partners, offering students valuable networking opportunities and exposure to professional standards.
Evaluation criteria for these projects include originality of approach, depth of analysis, clarity of communication, and adherence to ethical guidelines. Faculty mentors are chosen based on expertise relevant to the student's project area, ensuring personalized guidance throughout the process.
