Each course within the curriculum is designed to provide students with both theoretical knowledge and practical application. The following are descriptions of some advanced departmental elective courses:
Advanced Retail Analytics
This course focuses on the application of statistical models, machine learning algorithms, and data visualization tools in retail decision-making. Students learn how to extract actionable insights from large datasets to optimize pricing strategies, forecast demand, and personalize customer experiences. The course includes hands-on sessions using industry-standard platforms such as Python, R, and Tableau.
Retail Technology and Innovation
This elective explores emerging technologies such as AI, IoT, blockchain, and AR/VR in retail environments. Students gain insights into how these technologies are transforming supply chains, store operations, and consumer interactions. Practical sessions involve building prototypes for smart retail solutions and evaluating their impact on business performance.
Sustainable Retail Operations
The course addresses environmental sustainability in retail by examining sustainable sourcing, waste reduction, energy efficiency, and circular economy principles. Students work on projects that evaluate the environmental footprint of retail operations and propose innovative solutions for reducing carbon emissions and promoting ethical practices.
Retail Design and Experience
This course delves into the design of physical and digital retail spaces to enhance customer engagement and satisfaction. Topics include store layout, user experience (UX) design, visual merchandising, and experiential marketing strategies. Students create designs for mock retail stores and present them to industry experts.
International Retailing
This course provides a comprehensive understanding of global retail markets, including cross-cultural consumer behavior, international expansion strategies, and geopolitical factors affecting retail operations. Students analyze case studies from different regions and develop plans for entering new international markets.
Retail Finance and Risk Management
Students explore financial planning, risk assessment, and investment decisions within the retail sector. The course covers topics such as capital budgeting, cost analysis, financial modeling, and insurance strategies tailored to retail operations.
Retail Innovation Lab
This hands-on lab course allows students to experiment with new retail concepts and technologies. Working in teams, students ideate, prototype, and test innovative solutions for real-world retail challenges, often collaborating with industry partners.
Project-Based Learning Philosophy
The department strongly emphasizes project-based learning as a core pedagogical approach. Students are encouraged to work on both individual and group projects throughout their academic journey. Mini-projects are assigned in the middle years of the program to reinforce theoretical concepts with practical application.
The final-year capstone project is a comprehensive initiative where students apply their knowledge to solve real-world retail challenges. Projects can be selected from industry partner proposals or student-generated ideas, and each student is paired with a faculty mentor who guides them through the research and implementation phases.
Evaluation criteria for projects include originality, feasibility, impact, and presentation quality. Students are assessed on their ability to conduct independent research, collaborate effectively in teams, and communicate complex ideas clearly and professionally.
