Detailed Departmental Elective Courses
1. Advanced Cardiac Nursing: This course covers advanced cardiac physiology, pharmacological interventions in heart disease, and nursing care for patients undergoing cardiac surgeries. Students will learn to monitor cardiac monitoring systems, manage acute coronary syndromes, and provide post-operative care.
2. Maternal and Neonatal Care: Designed for students interested in obstetric and neonatal health, this course explores prenatal care, labor management, postpartum complications, and newborn assessment techniques. It includes hands-on training in delivery room procedures and neonatal resuscitation protocols.
3. Mental Health and Psychiatric Nursing: This elective focuses on diagnosing and managing mental illnesses, therapeutic communication with psychiatric patients, crisis intervention, and ethical considerations in mental health care. Students will gain experience in various psychiatric settings including inpatient units and outpatient clinics.
4. Pediatric Nursing: A comprehensive course covering growth and development stages, pediatric diseases, nursing interventions for children, and family-centered care approaches. The curriculum includes simulations of common pediatric emergencies and chronic conditions such as asthma, diabetes, and cystic fibrosis.
5. Community Health Promotion: This course emphasizes community health assessment, health education strategies, and planning health programs for vulnerable populations. Students will develop skills in epidemiology, surveillance systems, and evaluating public health interventions.
6. Nursing Informatics: This course introduces students to electronic health records (EHR), clinical decision support tools, data analysis in nursing, and information security practices. Practical sessions include database design, user interface development, and integration of technology in patient care.
7. Emergency Response Management: Focused on emergency preparedness and response, this course covers disaster management, mass casualty incidents, trauma assessment, and rapid triage protocols. Students will practice in simulation environments mimicking real-life emergencies such as earthquakes, floods, or terrorist attacks.
8. Gerontological Nursing: This elective explores aging processes, chronic disease management in older adults, cognitive impairments, and end-of-life care. Students gain experience in long-term care facilities, assisted living homes, and specialized geriatric units.
9. Oncology Nursing: A specialized course covering cancer types, treatment modalities (chemotherapy, radiation therapy), symptom management, and psychosocial support for oncology patients. Includes training on handling hazardous drugs and supporting families through the cancer journey.
10. Public Health Policy: This advanced elective examines health policies at local, national, and international levels, including healthcare financing, regulatory frameworks, and public health law. Students learn to advocate for policy changes and influence decision-making processes in healthcare organizations.
Project-Based Learning Philosophy
The department's philosophy on project-based learning is centered around experiential education that bridges theory and practice. Projects are designed to mirror real-world scenarios, encouraging students to apply their knowledge creatively while developing problem-solving skills.
Mini-projects are assigned in the fifth semester, where students select a topic related to their interests or current healthcare challenges. These projects require literature review, data collection, analysis, and presentation of findings to faculty members and peers. The scope of these mini-projects is broad, ranging from developing a community health program to creating educational materials for patient care.
The final-year thesis or capstone project represents the culmination of the student’s academic journey. Students work closely with assigned faculty mentors to propose, execute, and defend a substantial research or clinical project. The evaluation criteria include originality of idea, depth of research, clarity of presentation, contribution to nursing practice, and professional demeanor during the defense.
Faculty mentors are selected based on their expertise in specific areas such as maternal health, mental health, public health, or emergency care. Students are encouraged to participate in research conferences, publish papers in journals, and present at national or international forums to enhance their academic profile.
